My first experience with Trespass was, of all places, a singer/songwriter festival at Fiddlestyx in Milton. While pretty much every one there who was performing was, well, a singer/songwriter, Trespass got the ball rolling with a little bit of rock 'n' roll. Now, to be honest, if you saw the line up for this show, these guys really seemed out of place. But, they were invited to perform because they're an original band. So what makes them different than the other original bands out there, you ask? Well, considering the fact that they've only been together for about a year and they're all in their teens...that will say a lot about their determination to succeed in this business. I mean, come on, you know as well as I do that the original music is still not accepted as much as it should be out there. There's a lot of bands that, while they have original music, they're forced to play covers just to survive. Bands like Spinebelt and Dead Leaves can go out and do a whole set of original music because they worked hard to make their music known and people have welcomed that with open arms because, well, let's be honest, they both released some killer albums. Now, Speaking of albums, it was at this show that I received a copy of the six song Trespass demo, "Mental Meltdown." While the album is a bit rough around the edges, it does show a lot of potential. The impression that I get from this release, as far as what direction the band is going in, would be alternative/heavy rock, at least that's how I'd describe it. Going back to determination, I know this is a band that's not afraid of a little hard work because they've called me plenty of times to see what I'm doing...as far as articles/promotion goes. Now, believe it or not, I don't get a lot of this and I work with a lot of bands. Most people just send me an e-mail saying, "Hey, what's up with our article?" So, it's good to see a band that's willing to follow up on something because it shows they're concerned about getting exposure. You know, I don't expect you to give me a phone call every day, but, if you're gonna give me a copy of your album, you'd think you'd care enough to follow up on it to see if I'm gonna write about it and where my article will appear. A lot of bands out there think the exposure will come to them just because they're out there performing every week and, as much as I hate to say it, that's just being lazy. Don't ever think you're so great that people will wanna write about you because you're in so and so band. That attitude will get you nowhere in this business. I know an artist...I was sent a copy of their album and I thought it was pretty good and I was willing to do an interview with them to help promote it. Well, I got blown off three times and that was enough for me. I never wrote about the CD, which is now gathering dust on my shelf...and, believe it or not, this person is supposed to have a national deal. Uh, yeah, she's gonna go far in this business. Her album will be featured in the bargain bin shortly after it's released...and those of you who know me know who I'm talking about. Anyway, back to Trespass, it's cool that they don't have this sort of attitude and that's why I think they're gonna go places in this business. They're still young, so, they've got a lot of time to learn new things and, from what I've seen so far, they're open to new ideas and they are willing to learn...and they're willing to follow up on everything, no matter how big or small it might be. Some of you musicians out there could learn a thing or two about this band, that's for sure. I'm gonna keep an eye on this band because I have faith in them and, as long as they keep doing what they're doing, they're gonna build up quite a name for themselves. So, if you need a good opening band, I would suggest giving these guys a shot. Check out their web page and be sure to get in touch.
