Altoona Band wins National Contest Dragon Fire to perform on National Television January 15, 2001 by Vickie J. Clements As immortal as their namesake, Dragon Fire, (Altoona-based band) defies and shatters all obstacles in their path to success. Together since 1992, they refuse to relinquish their domination of the local heavy metal music scene, never succumbing to the blasé expectations of mediocrity and passé trends of the societal standards. As true as the old adage maintains, hard work, determination and perseverance has paid off. In November 2000, Dragon Fire’s song “Cutting Dead Weight” was voted number one on Farmclub.com by thousands of fans across the globe. This mark of distinction has afforded them the opportunity to be heard by millions of music fans and dozens of record companies and producers across the nation. Farmclub.com, owned by Jimmy Iovine (President of Interscope) and Doug Morris (President of Universal Records), is an interactive television show in which the online music community affects the outcome of each show by voting for their favorite band. This affords unknown artists the opportunity for their original music to be heard throughout the world via the Internet. As the November 2000 Farmclub.com winner, Dragon Fire won a trip to Los Angelos, California, and performed outside on stage in the center of the famous Universal Studios CityWalk, Hollywood. When asked what this means for the band, Guitarist Chris Peters replies, "This just confirms what we've known all along: that we have the talent and determination to be successful in this business. Farmclub just provided us with the chance to be heard by the right people." Upon returning to Altoona, Dragon Fire was greeted by hundreds of maniacal fans as they performed on stage at the Crow Bar in State College, Pennsylvania. A Farmclub.com camera crew returned to Altoona with Dragon Fire, spending the next three days shadowing the band members throughout their day. Dragon Fire’s Hollywood performance and a behind-the-scenes documentary will be telecast nationally in the coming weeks. Farmclub.com airs Friday's at 11 p.m. and Saturday’s at midnight on the USA Network. When asked to comment on their recent success, Lead Throat “Robo” Ron Riley replies: “This is like a dream-come-true. We’ve never given up on our sound and never given in to what others told us we needed to do to succeed in this town. We have our own style and if you like it, great, because we’re not changing for anyone. Apparently people like it.” A commanding, explosive performance attributes to Dragon Fire's continued success in the power groove metal scene. Snarling apocalyptic lyrics about deceit, corruption and a world-gone-to-hell, they attack each song with uncompromising precision and aggression, savage and relentless beyond emotional control. At a Dragon Fire show, fans know they will experience metal at its best.
